Department of Islamic studies

Welcome to the Department of Islamic Studies, Manarat International University (MIU). The Department of Islamic Studies provides an excellent opportunity for the students to study Islamic knowledge with modern facilities. It gives quality education and moral values to create educated and moral human being who can work in national and international level. We have highly qualified and skilled faculty members having foreign degree and training.

  • The program aims to induce the students to attain specialized knowledge dealing with the fundamental sources of Islam namely the Qur’an and Sunnah.
  • The program provides the specialized knowledge integrated with relevant other disciplines so that graduates become competent to accept the challenges of the present world and, thus, can depict the beauty of Islam to the world as well.
  • Through this program, the students achieve proficiency and methodological skills, and become capable of making the noble teachings relevant to any condition of human life.
  • It offers courses related to the classical and contemporary subject matters emphasizing unity among the races, gender equitability, religious harmony and moderation.

The undergraduate program offers students courses that incorporate the theoretical and practical methods of study related to Qur’an and Sunnah (the practices of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), covering the theological and human sciences studies. It offers courses related to the classical and contemporary subject matters emphasizing unity among the races, religious harmony and moderation. In addition, it provides proper understanding of the worldview of Islam to meet the needs of global importance.

  1. The BA (Honors) in Islamic Studies is of four years duration and divided into 12 semesters (Tri-semester). Each semester consists of 14 weeks, of which:
    • 12 Weeks for class teaching
    • 01 Week for Mid-term Examination and
    • 01 Week for holding the semester final examinations.

  2. The program includes teaching of 41 course units for a total of 4100 marks, which will be resulted in 124 credit hours.
  3. The total credit hours are evaluated on the basis of 4100 total marks, of which 4000 marks for 40 taught course units and 100 marks for Dissertation/Project/Fieldwork/Internship.
  4. Since the credit hours are counted on the basis of lecture class/contact hours per week, the number of lecture classes/contact hours is determined according to the credits assigned to each course unit.
  5. The prospective students are usually required to take 03-04 courses (12 Credits) per semester. In any reasonable case, students may be allowed to take minimum 02 courses (6 credits) and maximum 05 courses (15 Credits) in a regular semester. However, in the last academic semester, students may be allowed to take only Dissertation/Project/Fieldwork/Internship only (04 Credits). On the basis of good and acceptable reason, 02 course consist of 04 credits can be taken by the students instead of Dissertation/Project/Fieldwork/Internship.
  6. Dissertation/Project/Fieldwork/Internship: One (01) intensive Islamic studies project work (04 credits). The intensive major in Islamic studies gives students an opportunity to undertake a semester-long program of original research resulting in a contribution to Islamic knowledge. The semester-long project requires substantial independent research and knowledge of an Islamic subfield. Students may use various research methods such as qualitative and quantitative. They may conduct field survey and interview session to collect the data besides other sources. Findings may be presented in various forms. The primary and secondary supervisors (if requires) will be selected from the department by the academic committee of the department
  7. In BA (Hons.) in Islamic Studies program, there will be an option for the students to do majoring in any of eights majors of this department. In that case students have to conduct at least 6 courses (18 credits) from that specialized courses. Therefore, the degree will be as “BA (Hons.) in Islamic Studies (Major in ….)”.
  8. The Students may have the opportunity for doing more than one majors in this department. For each major, they have to conduct at least 6 courses (18 credits) from that specialized courses.
  9. Students from madrasah background and in regular program are required to conduct four (04) non-credit courses for enhancing their skill and proficiency in Arabic Language. As these are the non-credit courses, students have to obtain pass marks (40%) only. However, these courses will also be open for all other students of this department.

4 Years – 12 Semesters │ Regular and Evening Modes (For Evening mode program, academic activities will be held on Friday and Saturday) Medium of Instruction is Arabic-English. However, Bangla is also used in evening program.

A Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in Humanities, Business/Commerce, Science, Alim or its equivalent of 12 (twelve) years of Schooling with good academic results. For the foreign Schooling, equivalence will be determined by the university authority or as per the government’s rules

  • A student is required to attend the admission test and/or interview (if any).
  • Minimum required GPA is 2.5 in SSC/equivalent and HSC/equivalent separately. If the students get GPA 2.00 at SSC and HSC or equivalent level, he or she must have a total GPA at least 6.00 in both of the Examinations.
  • GCE O- level (with at least five subjects) with minimum equivalent GPA of 2.5 and GCE A-level (with at least two subjects) with minimum equivalent GPA of 2.5 is required.
  • Candidates who have completed higher secondary education (12 years of schooling) under a system different from SSC/HSC, Dakhil/Alim or 'O/A' Levels are required to get approval of the Equivalence Committee of the University
  • Candidates who studied abroad have to submit equivalence certificates from the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka or Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board, Dhaka and UGC. However, in the case of any general notice/instruction or gazette from these offices or from the government, the MIU authority can make the decision in this regard.
  • Students who have basic knowledge in Arabic language or Arabic background or Hafiz alQur’an will be given priority in admission.
  • MIU’s other terms and conditions are applied.

Requirements of the BA (Honors) in Islamic Studies Degree are as follows:

a) Completion of 40 courses and Dissertation/Fieldwork/Internship (40 x 3= 120 + 4 = 124 credit hours). However, there is an option with a valid reason to take two (02) courses consist of 02 credits each (total 04 credits) instead of Dissertation/Fieldwork/Internship. Therefore, the minimum credit hours will be 124.
b) Passing of a course individually and maintaining a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is of 2.00.
c) It is mandatory for students to do Dissertation/Fieldwork/Internship in the final semester.


Grading System

The grading system of MIU for assessing the performance of the students shall be as follows:

Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) which is the grade average for all semester. Agraduating student must obtain CGPA at least 2.00 or else she/he will not be awarded degree.

Grade Point Average (GPA): The Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed by dividing the total grade points earned by the number of credit hours attempted in a given semester. The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is computed by dividing the total grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted at the U

Earned Credit: The courses in which a student has obtained minimum ‘D’ in ‘Theoretical courses’, Laboratory courses & General Viva-voce’ or higher grade will be counted as credits earned by the student. Any course in which a student has obtained ‘F’ grade will not be counted towards his/her earned credit. ‘F’ grade will not be counted for GPA calculation but will stay permanently on the Grade sheet and transcripts.
